BMW E46 SAS Reset with INPA K+CAN Interface

BMW INPA Cable is an OBD2-to-USB interface that allows full diagnostics for BMW vehicle mainly from 1998 to 2008 year.

Here I would like to share my writeup on how to reset BMW SAS (abbreviated by Steering Angle Sensor, is a vital part of the ESC system that measures the steering wheel position angle and rate of turn ) with BMW INPA interface.

Preparations:

Equipment:
BMW INPA K+CAN interface;

Car vehicle:
BWM E46;

When wheel alignment gets done or the actual physical direction the steering is set at, and the steering angle sensor’s last calibration is different enough to cause the DSC (dynamic stability control) ECU confusion in certain conditions.

Then you need to reset the steering angle sensor so that its straight ahead reading in software corresponds with the physical straight ahead position.

The following part is all about operation guide:

Install and open INPA diagnostic software;
Select vehicle as E46
Select chassis and then steering angle sensor;
BMW INPA K+CAN interface01
Click F5 to read status on Main Menu;
Click F4, the general status will be popped out;
The current SAS is calibrated to nearly 0 degree, please the following picture;

If the SAS calibration value is not extremely close or exact, you need to reset it.
Go back to main menu;
Select E46 again;
Select chassis;
Select DCS MK6;
Then click Shift+F4, the compensation routine will come out;

Click F1 to reset the SAS;

Go back to SAS menu to check the current status (the calibrated value should be approaching to 0);
Procedure completed.
